I know Wake County from living in it. Over the years we lived in the Knightdale area, in Southeast Raleigh and in the Garner area, so I have done the commutes, run the errands and learned how different one part of the county can feel from another. Many of the buyers and sellers I work with are looking somewhere in Wake. This guide pulls together what I share most often, with links to the official sources so you can go straight to them.
Where Wake County Is and Getting Around
Wake County is in the middle of central NC, with Raleigh, the state capital, as the county seat. Interstate 40 and Interstate 440 run through and around Raleigh, Interstate 540 and the NC 540 Triangle Expressway loop through much of the county, and U.S. 1 and U.S. 401 connect Raleigh with towns to the north and south. Johnston County sits to the southeast, and Durham and Research Triangle Park are to the west. Drive times change a lot with traffic and construction, so I always suggest driving your own commute at the hours you would really drive it.
Wake County Towns I Know Well
Each town has its own guide with history, parks, downtown and official links:
- Raleigh, NC, the county seat and state capital, where we lived in Southeast Raleigh
- Garner, NC, just south of Raleigh, where we also lived
- Knightdale, NC, east of Raleigh, another place we called home
- Fuquay-Varina, NC, in southern Wake, where my brokerage office is
- Cary, NC, west of Raleigh
- Apex, NC, southwest of Cary
- Morrisville, NC, near Research Triangle Park and RDU Airport
- Wake Forest, NC, in northern Wake
You can see all of the towns I cover on my Central NC communities page.
Homes in Wake County
Wake County has a wide mix: older homes near downtown Raleigh and the small town centers, townhomes and condos, large planned communities, and newer construction growing out in areas like Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale and Wake Forest. Living in three different parts of the county taught me that two neighborhoods a few miles apart can feel very different, so I like to look at a few areas together before we narrow the search. For current prices, I pull recent MLS sales for the specific area and home type rather than quoting a single countywide number.
Land and Acreage in Wake County
There is still land in the more rural edges of the county. Before you buy a parcel in Wake County, a few offices are worth a call:
- Wake County Environmental Services, for wells and septic systems
- The county or town planning department, for zoning, setbacks and subdivision rules
- FEMA and state flood maps, especially for parcels near the Neuse River and its creeks
- The county tax office, for the current value and any present use value program on farm or forest land
My guide to buying and selling land in North Carolina walks through each step.
