Cary is in western Wake County, between Raleigh and Research Triangle Park. It is known for its parks and greenways, and it has grown from a small railroad town into one of the larger municipalities in the state.

Where Cary Is and Getting Around

Cary is served by Interstate 40, U.S. 1 and U.S. 64, and the N.C. 540 toll road runs along its western side. Research Triangle Park and Raleigh-Durham International Airport are close by. A small part of Cary extends into Chatham County, so I always confirm the county for a specific address.

A Short History of Cary

Cary’s roots go back to a 1750s settlement called Bradford’s Ordinary. Allison Francis “Frank” Page, credited as Cary’s founder, bought land in 1854 and named his development after Samuel Fenton Cary. The town was incorporated in 1871, according to the Town of Cary. The Page-Walker Hotel, built around 1868 for railroad passengers, is now the Page-Walker Arts and History Center.

Parks and Outdoor Space

  • Fred G. Bond Metro Park is a 310-acre park around a lake with trails, fields and boating, per the Town of Cary.
  • The town reports more than 80 miles of greenway connecting over 30 parks and natural areas, per About Cary.

Downtown and Things to Do

Downtown Cary includes the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, a downtown park and local restaurants and shops. The Town of Cary posts current events.

Schools

Public schools here are part of the Wake County Public School System. Attendance zones can change, so I always suggest confirming a specific address with the district’s own address lookup tool before you make a decision.

Buying or Selling in Cary

Cary is known for its parks and greenways, and I am happy to help you find a home near the ones you will enjoy most. Because a small part of Cary reaches into Chatham County, I always confirm the county for each address so buying or selling here goes smoothly.
