Sanford is the county seat of Lee County, a city that grew up at a railroad junction near the center of North Carolina. I have represented buyers on two homes in the Sanford area. If you are thinking about a move here, I hope this page is a helpful start.

Where Sanford Is and Getting Around

Lee County sits near the geographic center of the state, on the fall line between the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain, according to Lee County. The City of Sanford describes its downtown as active, with boutiques, cafes and community events. Drive times change with traffic and construction, so I always suggest testing your own commute at the hours you would actually drive it.

A Short History of Sanford

After the Civil War, the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad crossed the Western Railroad, and the village of Sanford grew up at that junction. It was named for railroad engineer Col. Charles Ogburn Sanford and incorporated in 1874. Lee County was formed in 1907 from parts of Moore and Chatham Counties, with Sanford as its seat, and in 1947 Sanford and Jonesboro merged, according to Lee County history.

Things to Do

The Railroad House, built in 1872 for the railroad’s first depot agent, is now a local history museum, with the Old Steam Locomotive No. 12 nearby. The city’s community page lists Depot Park, public art and the Sanford Municipal Golf Course, originally designed by Donald Ross in 1934. Sanford also has a sister city relationship with Yixing, China, since both are known for their pottery heritage.

Schools

Public schools here are part of Lee County Schools. Attendance zones can change, so I always suggest confirming a specific address with the district’s own address lookup tool before you make a decision.

Buying or Selling in Sanford

Sanford offers the services of a county seat with a walkable historic downtown. A Sanford mailing address can be inside or outside city limits, so I always confirm that, along with zoning and utilities, for each property.
