Where Durham Is and Getting Around
Durham is served by Interstate 40, Interstate 85, the Durham Freeway (N.C. 147) and U.S. 15-501 toward Chapel Hill. Research Triangle Park and Raleigh-Durham International Airport are to the southeast. Small portions of the city extend into Wake and Orange counties.
A Short History of Durham
Durham grew around a railroad depot on land donated by Dr. Bartlett Durham. Its official birthday is April 26, 1853, when the post office opened, and it was incorporated on April 10, 1869, according to the City of Durham. The city’s tobacco history gave it the Bull City nickname, and it is home to Duke University and North Carolina Central University.
Bennett Place, a state historic site in Durham, is where Generals Johnston and Sherman signed surrender terms in April 1865, the largest troop surrender of the Civil War, per NC Historic Sites.
