Benson is in southwestern Johnston County, and it is a place many people know first from Mule Days or from passing through on the interstate. It has a historic downtown and a long agricultural story.

Where Benson Is and Getting Around

Benson sits near where Interstate 95 and Interstate 40 meet in southern Johnston County, which gives it access both north and south along I-95 and northwest toward Raleigh on I-40. Smithfield, Four Oaks and Dunn are all nearby. I always recommend driving your likely commute at rush hour before you decide.

A Short History of Benson

Benson’s story began when Alfred Monroe Benson bought land in 1874, and the town was incorporated in 1887 after the railroad arrived, according to the Town of Benson’s brief history. The historic downtown and nearby neighborhoods were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Benson Mule Days began in 1949 to honor farmers and the mule, once the area’s main draft animal. It is held in September, and you can see current details at Benson Mule Days and background on NCpedia.

Parks and Outdoor Space

Benson Parks and Recreation offers sports, senior programs and tennis, among other activities. See the Town of Benson site for current parks and programs.

Downtown and Things to Do

Downtown Benson is a National Register historic district with local businesses and community events. The Benson Downtown page is the best place to see what is happening.

Homes in the Benson Area

Homes in the Benson area range from older houses near the historic downtown to newer neighborhoods and rural homes on larger lots. Its spot near two interstates draws buyers who commute in more than one direction. For current prices, I pull recent MLS sales for the specific area and home type you are considering.

Land and Acreage Near Benson

Southern Johnston County still has a lot of farmland and wooded land. Before buying a parcel, check septic suitability with Johnston County Environmental Health, zoning with the town or county, road access and any farm or forestry use that affects taxes. My guide to buying and selling land in North Carolina walks through it.

Schools

Public schools here are part of the Johnston County Public Schools. Attendance zones can change, so I always suggest confirming a specific address with the district’s own address lookup tool before you make a decision.
